About Us

The Health Index is an initiative of MaineHealth that monitors progress on Maine’s most pressing health priorities. Launched in 2008, the Health Index initiative uses health data to inform the needs and opportunities for improving health across the state. The initiative focuses on seven priority areas that have a major impact on Maine’s overall health status:

  • Childhood immunizations
  • Tobacco use
  • Obesity
  • Preventable hospitalizations
  • Cancer deaths
  • Cardiovascular deaths
  • Prescription drug abuse and addiction

Each year, the Health Index Initiative releases its annual Health Index Report, a credible resource for community health data in Maine. The report describes how the MaineHealth system and its many partners are addressing each of the high priority issues through clinical, community and policy strategies.
